You may have heard of essential oils, but have you ever thought about diffusers?

If you have, you’re probably wondering what the best essential oil diffuser is.

I’m obsessed with all things to do with natural remedies and health, so when I came across essential oils for the first time, you can imagine how excited I got! 😃

A natural bottle of oil that can improve my health, affect my mood, help me sleep AND improve my physical appearance?

Sign me up.

Now think about putting those same oils into a little device that spreads it throughout the room effortlessly and makes everything smell amazing.

You see what I mean?

Ok, ok, even if you’re not as obsessed as I am – you seriously need to consider this.

Do you come home from work or school feeling tired and you know you should go work out but you just don’t have the energy?

Diffuse some essential oils, wait 20 minutes and *BAM* motivation.

Got kids that always refuse to go to bed?

Diffuse some lavender and they’ll be asleep in no time.

Or maybe, you’re obsessed with candles?

Diffusers spread the scent further than a candle without the added fire hazard!

Essential oils are great for your health and with the added bonus of being able to benefit from them without even thinking about it, makes it a win-win.

(By the way, if you haven’t read my complete guide to all 94 essential oils, what are you waiting for? Click here to read it now.)

Chapter 1

What are the benefits of using a diffuser?

electric diffuser mist chapter

The benefits of using an essential oil diffuser aren’t only limited to which essential oil you use.

Of course, diffusing a certain oil to relieve your headache will go ahead and do exactly that, but diffusers in general have a number of uses:

  • Purify the air
  • Works great as a humidifier
  • When not using a heat diffuser, it retains the benefits of each essential oil
  • Improves your overall mood
  • Great for allergy sufferers
  • Natural insect repellant
  • Easy aromatherapy
  • Helps with mental focus
  • Improves sleep
  • Safer than candles
  • Makes breathing easier
  • Works great at calming children
  • Makes your room smell amazing
  • And so much more!

The prices vary for each diffuser there is, but it’s a great investment for anybody that cares about their wellbeing.

What do I mean by ‘each diffuser’?

Yep, there are different types – I explain them all here:

Chapter 2

Different Types of Diffusers

reed diffuser layout

There are 5 types of diffusers, from electric designs to natural materials and each has their own pros and cons.

  • Nebulizer/Cold Air Diffusers
  • Ultrasonic/Humidifying Diffusers
  • Heat Diffusers
  • Evaporative Diffusers
  • Reed Diffusers

Nebulizer/Cold Air Diffusers

Nebulizer diffusers diffuse the essential oils into the air without using water or heat, but they can struggle with dispersing thicker oils you choose to use.

It also retains the integrity of the oils, as heat destroys the therapeutic benefits.

They attach directly to the essential oil bottle, disperse a strong concentration of the oil, need no set-up and usually come with a timer for when you want the equipment to run.

If you want to use your diffuser whilst you sleep, nebulizer designs have no light – so it won’t get in the way of rest. 😴

Sadly, they use up the oil quickly as that’s all the machine diffuses (without the water to dilute).

They are also noisier than other types and more expensive.

Pros:

  • You can still benefit from the essential oil’s therapeutic properties
  • Easy to use
  • Diffuse 100% essential oils into the air for a continuous mist
  • Need no set up
  • Can use it whilst you sleep
  • Timer installed

Cons:

  • Louder
  • Uses up a large volume of essential oils
  • More expensive
  • Struggles to diffuse thicker oils

Ultrasonic Diffusers

Ultrasonic and nebulizer diffusers are very similar, except ultrasonic uses water to create a mist.

It still doesn’t use heat, so the properties of the essential oils aren’t being destroyed and (because it uses water) it can double up as a humidifier!

They are great at purifying the air and getting rid of odors, and are usually cheaper than nebulizer diffusers.

A lot of people who care about the health benefits of essential oils choose this one and may say it’s the best essential oil diffuser type.

Pros:

  • Uses less oils than a nebulizer
  • Doesn’t destroy the therapeutic properties
  • Can be used as a humidifier
  • Cleans the air
  • Great for allergy sufferers

Cons:

  • Not recommended to use citrus oils as it may erode the diffuser parts
  • Requires setup
  • Weaker concentration of essential oils

Heat Diffusers

Heat can be used to evaporate water into a mist that can be diffused through the air, so using this same principle, you can apply it to essential oils.

The issue with heat diffusers are that they are only useful for distributing the scent as the heat will destroy the therapeutic benefits of each oil.

These types of diffusers can be as simple as a piece of clay heated with a few drops of your favourite oils on and voila! An essential oil diffuser!

So they are generally cheaper, but when wanting to relieve any headaches, improve your mood or any other physical benefit, a heat diffuser won’t work for you.

This includes essential oil burners, lamp rings, etc.

Pros:

  • Cheaper
  • Easy to use
  • Distributes the scent effectively
  • Completely silent

Cons:

  • Destroys therapeutic properties
  • Needs a source of heat if using clay diffusers 🔥
  • Cannot be left unattended if using candles
  • Won’t be as effective in larger spaces

Evaporative Diffusers

These are better for personal use or in a small space as evaporative diffusers rely on natural air circulation or some form of a fan blowing air through a filter with drops of your chosen essential oils on.

The lighter notes (basically anything with smaller particles that are easier to evaporate) diffuse first and the heavier notes (the larger particles that are more difficult to evaporate) diffuse at the end.

You won’t be able to diffuse the entire oil in one go with both it’s top and base notes and full set of benefits, but you can still enjoy the scent.

If you’ve seen car diffusers, air diffusers, essential oil necklaces, diffuser bracelets, earrings or any form of diffuser jewellery – this is exactly what it is.

Pros:

  • Small and easy to use
  • Great for personal use
  • Inexpensive
  • Can be worn and taken with you
  • Makes no noise

Cons:

  • Can’t distribute the scent in a large space
  • Can’t benefit from the essential oil’s therapeutic properties
  • Will only work where there is air circulation – inconsistent aromatherapy

Reed diffusers

Reed diffusers are popular with so many people, so I felt like it was important to at least include them!

A reed diffuser is a bottle with the ends of ‘reeds’ (thin wooden rattan sticks) placed inside.

There is usually a perfume inside or a mixture of essential oils immersed in a carrier oil that travel up the rattan reeds and the scent is distributed throughout the room.

Again, these are similar to evaporative diffusers and air diffusers.

Pros:

  • Inexpensive
  • Makes no noise
  • Distributes scent effectively when using fragrance oils
  • Looks great as decor

Cons:

  • Will only work where there is air circulation – inconsistent aromatherapy
  • Not much scent distribution when using pure essential oils

So you know what they’re good for and all the different types, but where can you get one?

I tried out the most popular essential oil diffusers to make your life that little bit easier:

Essential Oil Diffuser Reviews (Update: 2017)

wooden diffuser buttons

There are tons of different diffusers out there, but which one do you get? If you’re not sure what you’re looking for, these reviews are your best friend.

I reviewed the most popular diffusers people were buying on the internet after trying them out for myself.

This list starts with the not so good to the best, so if you want to know which came first – skip ahead to the end!

Bestidy Essential Oil Diffuser

Type of diffuser:
Ultrasonic
Water capacity:
300ml
Specifications:
Weight is 721g and is 19.2 x 17.6 x 17.6cm.
Run time:
On continuous mode, it can run up to 12 hours and it has timers for 1 hour, 3 hours and 6 hours.

How to use:

  • Remove the clear cover
  • Remove the inner white cover
  • Fill the water tank with 300ml of water (or just below the max fill line)
  • Add in a few drops of your favourite essential oils
  • Replace the white cover
  • Replace the clear cover
  • Set your mist mode on

Care and maintenance:
Every week, clean the water tank by wiping it down with a wet towel and then drying it. Do the same quick clean after using citrus oils – the residue is known to erode the plastic.
Design:
This diffuser has 7 LED light colour options that can be chosen as bright or dim. You can choose one colour or for it to cycle through all 7.

It’s a lightweight design with an automatic switch off for when the tank runs out of water (great for safety) and has a double cover – one white one on the inside and another clear one that goes over the top.
My review:
This diffuser with it’s double cover seems excessive to me, but it worked great and lasts for the promised 12 hours. It has working timers, a safety auto switch-off but no intermittent mode. You can use it as mist only which is great for at night or when you just want the diffuser function. You can buy your own from Amazon here.
The downsides:
For me, this was the least attractive diffuser out of them all and it doesn’t have an intermittent mist mode. It’s difficult to fit into decor, but if you’re looking for something that does the job and nothing more – this is great.

Aromacare Essential Oil Diffuser

aromacare diffuser

Type of diffuser:
Ultrasonic
Water capacity:
300ml
Specifications:
Weight is 798g and is 19.5 x 19 x 17.5cm.
Run time:
This design has a timer for 1 hour, 3 hours and 6 hours with a continuous mist mode that switches off when the water tank is completely empty (takes about 10 hours).

How to use:

  • Remove the outer cover
  • Fill the water tank with 300ml of water (or to just below the max fill line)
  • Add in a few drops of your favourite essential oils
  • Replace the cover
  • Set your mist mode on

Care and maintenance:

  • Clean this diffuser well, especially after using citrus oils, to avoid erosion of the plastic.
  • Use a mixture of equal parts vinegar and water and pour a small amount into the tank
  • Use a clean brush to rub the mixture all over the tank surface
  • Soak the mixture up with a clean towel
  • Repeat the above with plain water
  • Dry the water tank using another towel

Design:
This design has 7 LED light colours that can be set between dim, bright, continuous cycle of all 7, set still onto one colour or completely off to use the mist only.

It has a dark wood grain design on the plastic that would look great in anybody’s room with an automatic switch off that makes it safe to use, even whilst sleeping.
My review:
This diffuser looks great and has a small band round the base where the light shines through, giving a more sophisticated vibe. It gives out an even mist that spreads through a large room and is a good size. This runs for a long time and is great if you want a mist all night as you sleep. Buy it from Amazon here.
The downsides:
The button on the diffuser isn’t obvious and it can get confusing for someone who has never used it before. There is a small oval shape on the front with the right hand side being used to set the mist and the left hand side used to set the light. There is also no intermittent mist mode – only continuous and timers.

Eseoe Essential Oil Diffuser

eseoe diffuser

Type of diffuser:
Ultrasonic
Water capacity:
100ml
Specifications:
Weight is 381g and is 11.4 x 19 x 11.4cm.
Run time:
This diffuser has 3 mist modes – one is a continuous mode that lasts up to 3 hours, an intermittent mode that is 3 hours on and 3 hours off, that lasts up to 3 hours and a third mode that is also an intermittent mode but 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off that lasts up to 6 hours.

How to use:

  • Remove the cover
  • Fill the tank up with 100ml of water (or just below the max level line)
  • Add up to 3 drops of your favourite essential oils
  • Replace the cover
  • Set your mist mode on

Care and maintenance:

  • Wet a kitchen cloth
  • Wipe the inside of the tank
  • Use a dry towel or kitchen cloth to get rid of any water
  • Continue use

Design:
This has a mist only and light only feature, so you can choose one or both. It has 7 LED light colours that can cycle constantly or be chosen from.

It’s small and compared to being only a little bigger than an iPhone 7 with a ripple effect on the outer cover.

This design also an automatic switch off function, so when the water runs out, the mist switches off.
My review:
This small diffuser by Eseoe is a great, compact diffuser that would look great in any house or spa. The lights are all toned down and are great in a calming environment with no vivid reds or oranges (almost pastel tones) with a super quiet function.

It’s recommended to use 3 drops of essential oils to every 100ml of water, so if you’re looking to use blends that have more than 3 oils in, you may want to look into a larger diffuser that holds more water, but this works great and the mist spreads far into a room.

You can buy your own from Amazon here.

The downsides:
I don’t know why this diffuser has an intermittent mode that is 3 hours on and 3 hours off when the mist can only last about 3 hours, anyway. There also isn’t a timer, if you only want it for a set period of time.

InnoGear Essential Oil Diffuser

innogear diffuser

Type of diffuser:
Ultrasonic
Water capacity:
150ml
Specifications:
Weight is 399g and is 21 x 11.2 x 11cm.
Run time:
On continuous mode, it lasts up to 5 hours and for intermittent mode (mist for 30 seconds and pause for 30 seconds) it can last up to 12 hours. When the tank is empty, the device will automatically stop diffusing.

How to use:

  • Twist the cover anti-clockwise and lift it up
  • Fill the water tank with 150ml of water (or just below the max fill line)
  • Add in a few drops of your favourite essential oils
  • Replace the cover and twist it clockwise to keep it on
  • Plug the power cord in and switch the mist mode on

Care and maintenance:
You’ll want to clean your diffuser, before adding in a different oil into your water tank, to make sure you’re not mixing your essential oils with any residue. Just use a wet towel to wipe down the inside and then use a clean towel so the device is dry.
Design:
This lightweight diffuser is made from BPA-free plastic and it has 7 LED lights that you can choose from or leave to cycle through continuously.

It’s extremely quiet and even makes no noise when using the switches (most designs make a beep noise) or when the tank runs out – making it great for children or for anyone, when they are sleeping.
My review:
This diffuser is great with it’s 7 LED lights and compact design. It’s run time is long for holding only 150ml of water and is great for anyone who wants to take this to work, a yoga studio, gym or anywhere.

Even if this diffuser was knocked over, it would make minimal mess as the lid locks onto the base! This is great for those with kids, pets or at parties where there are a lot of people. Buy your own from Amazon here.
The downsides:
There is no function for the mist only or light only, which may be a downside to those who can’t sleep with any form of a light. The white, opaque design may be unappealing to some – I prefer the wood grain designs myself, but it doesn’t affect the function.

There also isn’t a timer for an hour, 2 hours and so on.

Leshp Essential Oil Diffuser

leshp diffuser

Type of diffuser:
Ultrasonic
Water capacity:
100ml
Specifications:
Weight is 440g and is 20 x 13 x 11.5cm.
Run time:
This diffuser runs for 3 hours with a continuous mist and 6 hours on intermittent mode (30 seconds mist and then 30 seconds off continuously). It has an auto shut off function so that when the water runs out in the tank, it will automatically switch off for safety reasons.

How to use:

  • Remove the upper lid
  • Pour 100ml of water into the tank (or just below the max line)
  • Add in a few drops of your favourite essential oils
  • Replace the lid
  • Switch the mist mode on and your oils are now being diffused!

Care and maintenance:

  • Unplug the device
  • Use a wet towel to wipe the inside of the water tank down
  • Use a dry towel to make sure there is no oil or water residue left behind
  • Continue use as you would

For more intensive care once a month, go ahead and do as above but using a mixture of vinegar and water in equal parts – make sure to rinse the tank after using the vinegar to avoid diffusing any smells that are less than pleasant.
Design:
This diffuser has 7 LED light colours that the device cycles through with a mist only/light only function and you can choose your favourite colour from all 7 by clicking the light button again on the colour you want to keep. It’s completely quiet and is great for helping you or anyone else sleep better at night.

It’s made from plastic and is small in size with a 100ml water tank, which is a lot smaller than the usual 300ml tank. This looks great and would be great in a child’s bedroom.
My review:
This is a great little diffuser that would make a welcome feature in any home. It’s small, light, compact and can be placed almost anywhere with a plug socket. The LED lights are dim so you can easily use it as a night light, but it has the added option of mist-only, so you can sleep easy with the diffuser still on.

Buy yours from Amazon here.
The downsides:
To switch this diffuser off, you have to unplug the main device because there’s no off button. It also has a smaller tank so it won’t be able to diffuse a mist for as long as other designs. If you don’t want to use a diffuser all day or night, then this is perfect for you – but if you want to keep the mist on as you sleep, then you’ll need a different device.

Weight is 422g and is 16.5 x 16.5 x 14.5cm.
Run time:
Up to 8 hours of continuous mist. It has a 1 hour, 3 hour and 6 hour timer built in or a continuous mist mode that will keep running until the machine runs out of water. When it has, it will automatically switch off. You can also choose between a strong and light mist.

  • Remove the cover
  • Pour in 300ml of water (do not exceed the amount)
  • Add in a few drops of your favourite essential oils

It’s easy-to-use and doubles up as a humidifier.
Care and maintenance:

  • Remove the cover
  • Pour a small amount of water in
  • Use a soft brush to clean the inside of the tank
  • Use a cloth to soak up the water
  • Wipe it dry

Design:
You can get this diffuser in both a light wood grain or a dark wood grain – both of which look great and would suit every style of home.

It has 7 colour LED lights you can choose from or cycle through and each light has a bright or dim setting so you can use it during the day and night. It also lets you use the device with no light at all.

The plastic is BPA free and it’s function is ‘ultra-quiet’.
My review:
It works great in a large room, spreading the mist to every corner and it’s reassuring with the automatic shut-off setting.

I definitely noticed it help me sleep much better and feel calmer throughout my day, so I’d highly recommend this to anyone who is often stressed.

This product does a great job at being a diffuser, especially for those who want to use it all day and night. But the best part is that I hate using anything complicated and this is the easiest it can get when setting anything up! Buy yours from Amazon here.
The downsides:
There is a beep that the machine gives off when the timer stops, as well as when using the buttons.

For me, this wasn’t much of an issue but if you have children who are light sleepers, it may be.

Type of diffuser:

Water capacity:
400ml
Specifications:
Weight is 739g and is 17.4 x 17 x 13cm.
Run time:
Up to 10 hours of continuous mist. This one also has a 1 hour, 3 hour and 6 hour timer built in or a continuous mist mode that will keep running until the machine runs out of water.

It will automatically switch off when the water tank is empty.

How to use:
Again, another easy-to-use diffuser that requires minimal setup.

  • Remove the cover
  • Plug the power cable in
  • Pour in 400ml of water and 5-6 drops of essential oil
  • Replace the cover
  • Set the timer/mist mode on

This is a great humidifier, air purifier and diffuser all-in-one.
Care and maintenance:
It’s recommended to use a 1:1 ratio of vinegar to water solution for cleaning this diffuser.

  • Remove the cover of your diffuser
  • Mix 2 tablespoons of vinegar with 2 tablespoons of water
  • Pour this into your diffuser
  • Use a soft brush to make sure the solution covers all the tank
  • Soak the solution up using a dry towel
  • Pour a small amount of water into the tank
  • Use a clean soft brush to get rid of any vinegar solution inside the tank
  • Soak the water up using a dry towel
  • Dry thoroughly

Design:
The actual humidifier is BPA free plastic but it has a wood grain effect that will look great in any home with an almost silent function.

This also has 7 LED colour lights that you can choose between, cycle continuously through, set bright or dim or completely off.
My review:
The design is great and the extra 100ml (most diffusers hold up to 300ml) means it can continue diffusing for at least 2 more hours.

It also seems huge on the photos but it really isn’t that big, making it a compact and handy device you can put almost anywhere. It also has a subtle ‘bubbling’ sound which is therapeutic too.

Buy your own from Amazon here.
The downsides:
The only downside for me is how lightweight the entire diffuser is.

It’s made from plastic and is convenient for taking to an office, gym, work or anywhere but I personally prefer a heavier model (or one with a heavier base) that would feel more sturdy and less likely to fall, if knocked.

Water capacity:

Specifications:
Weight is 522g and is 19 x 11 x 11cm.
Run time:
Up to 5 hours of continuous mist but it also has an intermittent mode that gives off a mist of 30 seconds and stops for 30 seconds in a cycle for up to 10 hours.

It will automatically switch off when the water tank is empty.

How to use:
This smaller design has the same setup as other diffusers:

  • Remove the cover
  • Plug the power cable in
  • Pour in 100ml of water using the provided jug and a few drops of essential oil
  • Replace the cover
  • Set the timer/mist mode on

Care and maintenance:
The same basic instructions are given for cleaning this diffuser. Either use just water or a neutral solution which is the vinegar and water mixture.

  • Remove the cover of your diffuser
  • Mix 1 tablespoon of vinegar with 1 tablespoon of water
  • Pour this into your diffuser
  • Use a soft brush to make sure the solution covers all the tank
  • Soak the solution up using a dry towel
  • Pour a small amount of water into the tank
  • Use a clean soft brush to get rid of any vinegar solution inside the tank
  • Soak the water up using a dry towel
  • Dry thoroughly

Design:
This one uses real wood for the cover! The main design is plastic, as it should be when holding water, but it’s nice to see some real wood grain being used on a diffuser.

It’s small and looks great on a shelf even as an ornament, the scent spreads across a large area (the specs even say the mist covers 161 square feet) making it great for open living spaces and it looks amazing amongst a candle display!

This design also has 7 LED colours that can be cycled continuously or one colour chosen from and is completely silent.
My review:
I love anything that looks good and does the job, and this sure does both!

A great, stunning device that matches any decor and can easily blend in wherever you like. It may hold only 100ml of water, but using the intermittent mode it still can last a long time before automatically switching off from it’s empty water tank.

The LED lights are subtle and make a great night light in any child’s room. Buy yours from Amazon here.
The downsides:
If you want to diffuse a mist for longer periods of time, a 100ml diffuser may not be the best choice.

This product recommends very minimal care of a solution of lemon juice and water every few weeks and a wipe down with a clean towel every so often.

  • Mix together a tablespoon of lemon juice with 2 tablespoons of water.
  • Soak a kitchen towel in this mixture
  • Wipe the inside of the tank on all surfaces with the soaked towel
  • Wipe the tank again with a clean towel soaked in only water
  • Dry the tank thoroughly

Design:
This fun diffuser comes with 7 LED light colours that you can choose from individually or set to automatically change and cycle through them all with bright or dim settings. It’s a silent device that can be set for a continuous mist, timed mist, mist only or light only.

It’s made from a white, lightweight, opaque plastic and is extremely vibrant when the light is turned on.
My review:
This diffuser is great! It gives off a mist instantly, the colours are vibrant and offer a wide spectrum to suit any household, it reaches into a large area and it has a solid, sturdy design that is difficult to knock over.

It’s super easy to clean with a paper towel every couple of days or between each mist when you’re using a different essential oil and I’d highly recommend this for people with children. The design is small and compact and for the 160ml tank, the mist lasts a long time!

The downsides:
The only downside for me was that I didn’t like the white design as much as the wood grain diffusers you can get. That’s entirely personal preference and doesn’t affect the function but it’s worth mentioning.

Many users recommended to simply rinse the water tank and dry it when unplugged so all oil residue is gone. No other cleaning methods are needed.
Design:
The design of the diffuser is wood grain but it’s actually made from plastic with 7 LED colours to choose from. You can choose between dim and bright for one colour or have it cycle through all 7 continuously.

Another one with the safety feature of switching off automatically when the water tank is empty and has a ‘whisper-quiet’ system.
My review:
This diffuser is great! With the common 300ml of water it holds, it can last up to 10 hours and spread the scent throughout a large room quickly.

The auto switch-off function works, the lights are vibrant but I’m mostly impressed with the continuous mist time. It’s small, it’s lightweight, it looks great and it’s so easy to use and has multiple timer functions for everyone.

If you need a diffuser that will spread essential oils throughout your bedroom at night to help you sleep, calm your kids, clear out a cough, help you breathe or whatever else – this diffuser is the one you need. FAQ

essential oils with lavender and lemon

If this guide hasn’t covered it all, here are some more popular questions answered for you!

What does an oil diffuser do?

An oil diffuser or essential oil diffuser distributes essential oils through the air by evaporating them into a fine mist.

This is either done by using heat or a vibrating plate that turns the oil drops into micro particles that evaporate into the air – some diffusers use water and some don’t (nebulizers).

It’s up to you when it comes to which one you prefer, but both do the job without breaking down the therapeutic properties.

Using an oil diffuser means you can improve your concentration, help yourself sleep, reduce stress, calm your children down or whatever else you feel the need to use essential oils for.

The list is endless when it comes to aromatherapy and an oil diffuser has benefits for everyone.

What is the best essential oil diffuser?

If you haven’t read the reviews of the 10 diffusers I’ve tried out, my favourite is the VicTsing Essential Oil Diffuser.

It comes with 7 LED colours, a wood grain finish, lasts for a full ten hours despite having the usual 300ml water tank, is compact and super lightweight, and it’s almost silent – making it great to use all day and night!

This makes a great present for family or for any of your friends (or every room in your house 😉).

Buy it here from Amazon.

Can you use any kind of essential oil with an essential oil diffuser?

Yes, you can!

Every diffuser you buy will come with a manual and it may say some essential oils are too thick for their machine to diffuse (such as vetiver, sandalwood or patchouli) or citrus oils because they’re known for eroding the plastic, but usually these are all fine as long as you regularly clean the water tank and don’t use too many drops of essential oils.

What’s the difference between an essential oil diffuser and a vaporizer?

An essential oil diffuser is designed for aromatherapy and it releases a fine mist containing drops of your chosen oils that stays in the air for you to benefit from.

It doesn’t use heat otherwise the therapeutic properties end up destroyed.

Vaporizers use heat to create a steam for inhalation and it’s commonly used to clear congestion, ease flu symptoms or just to help the user relax.

How do you diffuse essential oils?

There are tons of ways to diffuse essential oils with the most common using an aroma diffuser device – designed to spread the oil in a fine mist across the room.

But apart from that, there are other ways you can have your own essential oil diffuser:

Tissue Diffuser

Let’s start with the basics… you can use a tissue to diffuse your essential oils!

Simply put a drop or two onto a tissue and smell the aroma whenever you feel the need. People also do this for a DIY car diffuser by folding the tissue and placing it into the car vent.

Heat Diffuser

More specifically, using a tea light.

You’d use a stone bowl/container that is then heated using a tea light, so the water evaporates with the essential oils.

There are oil burners out there with smaller bowls propped up on a stone base that has a gap for you to place a candle inside but the bigger the bowl is, the more aroma you will get.

Nebulizer Diffuser

This is a glass container filled with oils that has air pumped through so the oil is distributed into a fine mist.

It doesn’t use water so it will use up essential oils very quickly but it’s another option for you to consider.

Spray Bottle Diffuser

Use a spray bottle full of water and add in your favourite essential oils.

Shake it up and spray it wherever you like to benefit from the therapeutic properties or just to make your room smell better!

Just make sure to use glass, as essential oils erode plastic over time.

Fan Diffuser

It says it all in the title!

A fan diffuser is a small device that is just a fan with a disposable pad placed over the top. You drop your essential oils onto the pad and let the fan blow the aroma into the air.

This needs a regular top up if you’re using lighter oils (such as lemon), but the heavier oils (such as vetiver) will last longer.

When using different essential oils, you’re going to need to use different pads and they’ll also have to be changed after every few uses.

Necklace Essential Oil Diffuser

These necklaces usually are made of terracotta or are little cages with a cotton ball inside.

Simply add a drop or two to the terracotta/cotton and it will diffuse from natural air circulation. You can inhale the scent whenever you like (it is round your neck, after all!) and it won’t cause any irritation to your skin as it’s absorbed into the necklace.

Plug-in Diffusers

These are similar to the fan diffusers as you need to add drops to the pad, but it uses low heat instead.

Plug this into your wall or your car and smell the aroma as it gently heats the oils. This will only work for a small space but they are easy-to-use and portable.

Keep in mind, you will need to carry replacement pads with you for after every few uses or when using a new oil.

Best Essential Oil Diffusers for Large Rooms

When it comes to a large space, you need a diffuser that is going to spread the mist into every corner and not just a few metres from where it is.

Using any of the DIY methods (such as a tissue, oil burner, jewellery) are clearly not going to work. ☹️

The best kind are always going to be either ultrasonic or nebulizer diffusers – both of these are designed to turn the essential oils into a fine mist and keep them in the air so they spread across a large area.

Nebulizers go through large amounts of oils, very quickly, as they require no water but ultrasonic distribute the oils in a water-based mist.

Neither of them use heat, so you’ll be able to benefit from the therapeutic properties but the most popular are ultrasonic.

Try out one of these methods for yourself and see if essential oils are for you! Ultrasonic diffusers are always going to be my go-to but these are great for when you’re travelling, seeing a friend, in the car or anywhere else!

And that’s it, guys!

Essential oils are great at improving your health and making your life a little easier, all by a few drops into a diffuser!
